- Research of Picea abies
forests in Nature reserves
Short information:
The aim is to study protected Picea abies forests
and mainly the disturbances in them (windthrows, bark-beetle
outbreaks, possibly fires in the past). A new topic added
recently is to study the course of self-thinning processes
in more-or-less even aged patches, possibly originating
from stand-removal disturbances (a
part of WSL-SLF (Davos, Switzerland) Project supported
by the Velux Foundation). Study sites: "Bistrishko
braniste" nature reserve (Vitosha Mountain) and
"Parangalitca"
Nature Reserve (Rila Mountains)

- Research of
old-growth Pinus heldreichii forests
Short information:
The aim is to study some of the best-preserved (and
very few) old-growth Pinus heldreichii forests
in the world. Main tasks are to compose and analyze
tree-ring chronologies with span of more than 700 years
and learn which were the most important disturbances
and what was their role. Status:
chronology composed
and under analysis. More cores are to be added.

- Research of avalanches along the Northwestern slope
of Todorka Peak, Pirin mountains
Short information: The aim
of the study is to date the falling of big avalanches
along the Northwestern slope of Todorka peak, Pirin mountains
and to determine their influence on old-growth Pinus
peuce
forests Please

- Research of limiting factors at treeline
afforestations, Vitosha Mountain
Short information: The aim
of the study is to determine the influence of strong winds,
snow accumulations and extreme climate events (late frosts,
unusually cold or dry summers) on the growth of Macedonian
pine (Pinus peuce Griseb.), Scots pine (Pinus
sylvestris L.) and Norway spruce (Picea abies
Karst) plantations at the treeline on Vitosha Mountain.
It was a part of the PhD research of Eng. Momchil Panayotov
with scientific advisor Prof.Yurukov. Please

- Research of stressors in Pinus
sylvestris plantations in Western Bulgaria
Short
Information: As a result of afforestations during
the 50-s of the last century in Bulgaria there are large
mono-species plantations. One of the main species that
was used was Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L).
In some of the afforestations
there have been observed health problems. Main aim of
this research is to determine the main stressors in such
afforestations. It is a part of the PhD research of Nikolay
Zafirov with scientific advisor Prof.Mirchev.

- Research of Beech forests in
Balkan Range Mountains and reconstruction of past climate
based on 300 years chronology of Fagus silvatica
L.
Short information: The
project is a part of the PhD research of Dimitar Dimitrov.
It aims the collection of more information about natural
Beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) forests in Balkan Range Mountains
and reconstruction of climate based on 300-years chronology.
